Dr. Harvey attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he was a William C. DeLoach scholar and graduated in 1991. After completing his internship at Duke University Medical Center, he finished his residency training at Mount Sinai Medical Center and was awarded Resident of the Year in 1995. While in New York City he went on to complete a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry.

By the turn of the millennium, Dr. Harvey had settled in Birmingham, Alabama where he practiced for over 20 years treating inpatients and outpatient with dementia, mental health issues, and chemical dependency. He worked closely with the LGBTQ community and counseled couples and individuals alike.
