Even before graduating medical school, Dr. Nyembo was improving people’s health.
“The idea of learning something, applying it immediately and seeing the results - the medical results and the human results - is fascinating,” the doctor said.
His mother, a diabetic of 25 years, was his first patient.
“She was pretty sick. When I was in medical school, I would learn diabetes and go look at her chart and say, ‘Are we doing the right things?”
Based on his suggestion, Dr. Nyembo’s mother began a Keto diet.
“Her A1C was 10.5, and her doctor was thinking insulin. With the diet alone, her A1C is 6.5.”
That drive and determination helped Dr. Nyembo graduate medical school in the top 3% of his graduating class.
He also credits success to the right sequence in building patient relationships.
“I can read the lab results. I can see what is going on in the chart. But I want to hear from the patient, how much they are suffering. Once I grasp that, then we go to the medicine. The sequence creates a relationship and trust. I have found success with that.”
Role models in his life include the program director during his internal medicine residency.
“She taught me that you can be a human and an amazing doctor,” he concluded.
