When I provide medical care, my singular purpose is to pursue what is best for the person sitting in front of me. I strive to keep my care free from third-party interests, personal gains and unhealthy outside influences. For me, medicine is about building trusting and caring relationships — one person at a time. Sharing in both joy and agony, feeling the pride of achieving positive health outcomes and empathizing with the hopelessness of impossible situations are the moments that give me the greatest rewards.One experience that continues to shape my perspective involved a patient diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. He came to me scared, asking if it would hurt, if he would lose the ability to think and move and if he would still recognize his wife of 30 years. I felt helpless. We both knew the cancer was not curable and that treatment options were limited. All I could offer was comfort and the hope that one night he would go to bed and wake up in heaven, surrounded by loved ones.Months later, his wife returned as a patient and shared that he had passed away peacefully in hospice care. She told me he spoke often of our conversation and held onto that hope each night. That memory still makes me emotional. It reminds me of the palpable sense of helplessness in that room — and humbles me. It also reinforces a higher purpose in patient care: Cure sometimes, Treat often, Comfort always. — Hippocrates.Outside of medicine, I love singing.
