James J. Dougherty Sr., founder of the Dougherty Funeral Home was born in Philadelphia. Jim graduated from North Catholic High School in 1936 and from Dolan College of Embalming in 1941. A Navy veteran of World War II, he operated a funeral home in Port Richmond from 1955 to 1961, then became partner in the Beck-Dougherty Funeral Home in Levittown until he opened his present funeral home on Trenton Rd in Middletown Township in 1972. This location was the former St. Stephen's Church of Christ. Jim continued to serve families until his retirement in 1986. Jim passed away April 16, 2009 at the age of 91. His daughter Miriam continues her father's legacy by maintaining the high standards and compassion that Jim brought to the families that he served throughout his career.
