Heather began sewing when she was a child. A graduate of the University of Michigan Residential College with a degree in art history and theater, she trained in theater costuming and worked as a designer and pattern maker at a local leather goods business.

Wanting to expand her repertoire she started her own dressmaking and tailoring business in 1983, making custom couture. Contact with her customers, especially excited brides, became the most rewarding aspect of her business
