Dr. Gregory A. Tovmassian was born in Russia after his parents moved there from Armenia. His family immigrated to Sacramento in the mid-1990s, where Dr. Tovmassian graduated from Mira Loma High School.

He received a degree in science prior to being accepted to the California School of Podiatric Medicine in Oakland. After completing the four-year program, he graduated and was accepted to his top choice residency program at Kaiser Santa Clara in California. There he received training in foot and ankle surgery, especially reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery.
