Dr. Bendewald specializes in advanced laparoscopic gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery. He obtained his undergraduate degree from St. John's University in Minnesota and earned his medical degree from the University of South Dakota. He completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and his fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis.

While Dr. Bendewald's practice focuses in bariatric surgery, he is also experienced in performing surgeries related to a wide variety of conditions ¬- gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), paraesophageal (hiatal) hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, inguinal and ventral/incisional hernia, achalasia, gallbladder disease and diverticulitis. He also performs enterra and gastroparesis along with surgeries to treat both colon and gastric cancer.

In surveys conducted by Madison Magazine, Dr. Bendewalds's peers have consistently named him as one of Madison's Top Doctors for bariatric surgery.

Dr. Bendewald is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Surgical Society, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, the Society for Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

In his free time, Dr. Bendewald volunteers at the Dean Foundation Benevolent Specialist Project Free Clinic. He also enjoys spending time at home with his wife and taking their mixed Labrador/Collie dog for walks.
