Elisabeth “Liz” Stephens is a doctoral-trained physician assistant and has served as the inaugural director of advanced practice providers in primary care for Johns Hopkins Community Physicians since 2022. With over 25 years of clinical experience, she is recognized for her expertise in family medicine, women’s health, pediatrics and mental health, as well as her leadership in APP workforce development and clinical operations.

In her leadership role, Stephens has established a transformative Transition to Practice Program for newly graduated APPs, integrating structured mentorship and didactic education that significantly reduced turnover and strengthened clinical quality across the enterprise. She also serves as a key liaison between APPs and executive leadership, promoting strategic alignment, professional growth and excellence in patient care.

Stephens is a voting member of the Credentials Committee, and serves on the Peer Review, Compensation, and Recruitment and Retention committees, where she provides a strong and effective voice for advanced practice clinicians, ensuring their contributions are recognized and their needs represented at the institutional level.

As a practicing primary care clinician since 2000, she consistently ranks among the top providers for patient experience and is known for going the extra mile to advocate for both her patients and peers. She has played pivotal roles in opening new clinical sites, mentoring the next generation of APPs, and shaping institutional strategy through evidence-based workforce planning

A National Health Service Corps Scholar and proven innovator, Stephens is widely regarded for driving high-impact programs that elevate patient care, strengthen provider engagement and advance the APP professions across the organization.
