Carlos Becerra, M.D., serves as Medical Director of Cancer Research for Hoag Family Cancer Institute, and he practices as a board-certified medical oncologist focusing on gastrointestinal cancers and early phase clinical trial development and implementation. He brings years of experience and a compassionate approach when caring for his patients.

Dr. Becerra works with fellow cancer experts to improve the lives of patients through strategic leadership in advancing the Institute’s clinical research program and increasing the number of cancer clinical trials available. Dr. Becerra has led teams and programs focused on cancer research and clinical trials. His accomplishments in the field have earned him respect from his colleagues and patients. He is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research and Colombian Medical Association. Dr. Becerra has co-authored numerous publications featuring a variety of cancer types in relation to genetics and treatments.

Dr. Becerra completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where he became an assistant professor of internal medicine after completing his fellowship. Dr. Becerra attended medical school and completed his internship at the Universidad del Valle (Colombia), followed by his residency in internal medicine at Saint Francis Hospital in Illinois, where he was named chief resident.
