Today is Good Neighbor Day! Mayor Verzal signed a proclamation back in 2021 making it official in Deer Park! As a gift to the community, we’ve installed a “Neighborhood News” board to display all of the great things happening around town. My office is full of random memorabilia and personal effects and I’m going to share the meaning behind one of them each Friday. This week, I want to share this photo of my late father in law Chris Kies. He was a decorated Marine and police officer. He passed away in the line of duty as a Detective for the Lompoc Police Department way too young. I met him when I was 17 years old and loved being around him. The hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life is ask for his permission to marry his daughter when he was on life support. I place this picture not only to remember the great man he was but to remind me that life is way too short and unpredictable. I do what I do to help people prepare for the unexpected.
